The University of Miami presents For Darby: A Retrospective Exhibition by George Bethea.

For Darby is a survey exhibition of George Bethea's paintings from 2006 through 2019 and is in honor of Walter Darby Bannard (September 23, 1934 - October 2, 2016). Over their 25 year friendship, Bannard has championed Bethea's paintings in numerous essays. Often stating that Bethea is one of the best painters of his generation. Bannard wrote "At the same time that he is an innovator, ahead of his time, Bethea is an artist who belongs in spirit to earlier generations, for whom art was as serious in intention as it was joyful in experience. Bethea's painting make us turn from our usual pictorial presumptions to more intensely see and feel.

George W. Bethea was born in New York City in 1960. He has lived and worked in Miami for most of his adult life. He has degrees from Florida International University (B.F.A) and the University of Miami (M.F.A.) Bethea is known for his sensuous, colorful, and textured abstract paintings. Bethea uses flexible transparent acrylic mediums which allow him to spray, pour, and pile on the paint. His paintings have been exhibited and reviewed throughout North America and Europe where they can be found in numerous public and private collections.
