      Avocado Estate

Currently based at University of Miami's Frost School of Music, Avocado Estate is a freshly-formed progressive old-time/bluegrass trio. On fiddle/bass/guitar is James Schlender, a native of Bozeman, Montana, winner of numerous fiddle competitions, and a current freshman at the Frost School, where he studies with Glen Basham. James met Joy Adams (cello/fiddle/vocals) at an impromptu jam session during the first orchestra rehearsal break of the school year. Joy is originally from Spokane, Washington, is just starting her Masters degree at Frost, having graduated from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, which is where she met Geoff Saunders (banjo/bass/vocals), who attended Eastman for jazz bass, and is originally from Hartford, Connecticut. Geoff and Joy played together in an old-time band called the Windsor Folk Family, which is in the process of relocating to Miami one member at a time. Avocado Estate plays a broad range of traditional and original tunes, but in the fiddle/cello/bass formation, the group specializes in playing Mark O'Connor compositions and arrangements, and consider themselves very lucky to receive regular coaching from Mark O'Connor, who is in residence at the Frost School.
